Kai
is a homely, cabin styled restaurant centered around Kiwi cuisine. Its rustic interior with potted plants, cow skin bar stools, wooden paneling and warm toned lighting formulates an authentic atmosphere. The decor consists of antlers, rope, sheaths of wheat and weathered wood furnishings. Reservations are not necessary as the restaurant itself is very spacious with an additional upstairs seating area. Dining customers were accompanied by soulful background music. Unfortunately, some of the staff were not the most attentive and could even be rude.

We sampled 2 plates: one savory and one sweet. First, our deep fried calamari served with garlic aioli arrived. Although the calamari was lightly fried to a crisp, the insides remained juicy and soft. The squid tasted fresh and paired well with the salty and sour aioli.

Secondly, we ordered the Kiwi Pavlova with blueberry sauce and homemade hokey pokey ice cream. The consistency of the pavlova itself was very light and fluffy despite the large serving. Tangy berries juxtaposed with the sugary pavlova while the hokey pokey ice cream added a creamy twist. Even after our meal, the caramel swirls and vanilla lingered in our minds. On a whole, this decadent dessert is ideal for satisfying a sweet tooth.

Despite the unsatisfactory performance from staff, Kai's food was delectable and left us yearning for more. The restaurant is big enough for larger groups of friends or family, however we can imagine it gets busier at night.
